Week of November 4 to 8
Mardi Gras
Happy Halloween!
Dear Charlemagne Families
November is arriving with a blustery Fall day right on cue! Thank you all so much for participating in our Annual Halloween Parade. We loved seeing you all in the building, sharing in the joy of our students. Many of our students are currently learning about poetry so sharing a short French poem about Fall seems appropriate. Bon weekend!

Petite feuille verte bouge dans l’arbre,
Petite feuille jaune vole dans l’air,
Petite feuille orange dort dans l’herbe,
Chut ! Voici l’automne.

Small green leaf moves in the tree,
Little yellow leaf flies in the air,
Little orange leaf sleeps in the grass,
Hush! Here’s fall.

Ruby Bridges Walk
Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day
Please join us for our annual District-wide Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on November 14th. This event is built around the message that "racism has no place in the hearts and minds of our Children." Ruby made history in 1960 as a six year-old girl when she integrated William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans.

This annual walk is to commemorate Ruby's historic steps.

We will meet at 7:30am at Albertson’s (3075 Hilyard St.) We will leave promptly at 7:45am with an ETA of 8am at Charlemagne. Our route will be Hilyard to East Amazon and then up 39th Street to the school. All families are welcome to join us. Wear purple!

SAEBRs
Our school will be administering the SAEBRS (Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) universal screening tool in three windows throughout the 2024–2025 school year. SAEBRS (teacher version) and MySAEBRS (student version) is a brief, norm-referenced tool for screening students to identify areas of potential areas of growth. This universal screening tool is built to align academic and socio-emotional learning opportunities and interventions to increase well-being and developmental competencies.

Students will also have the opportunity to take the student assessment 2–3 times. To learn more about the student assessment, see:

Revised Cell Phone and Mobile Device Policy
We have revised our cell phone and mobile device policy, implemented to create the best possible learning environment for all of our students. This policy is based on research showing the negative impacts that constant cell phone and device use can have on academic performance, mental health, and overall student well-being.

The goal of this school policy is to align with our mission to foster engagement for learning and strengthen our school culture and community.

With some exceptions, cell phones and other mobile devices (including smartphones, smart watches, smart glasses, tablets, e-readers, and any other personal web-capable device) brought onto school grounds are to be stored “away for the day” from 8:30 a.m. to the end of the school day in the student’s backpack. If you are concerned about theft, your student may check-in their phone or watch at the office.

All calls during the day will be made from the school office.

If a student does not meet the expectations regarding cell phones and other mobile devices during the school day, a teacher or administrator will apply the following actions, which increase in severity:
  1. Verbal warning and reminder of the policy by school staff, student required to place device in their backpack or take it to the office for safe-keeping.
  2. Device confiscated and parent/caregiver notification and sent to the front office. Students are to retrieve their device from the office at the end of the school day.
  3. Device confiscated and parent/caregiver notification. Meeting with school administration and parent/caregiver scheduled.
Exceptions: Students with documented health conditions, as defined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan, may be permitted to use a cell phone or other mobile device during the school day if required to monitor or manage their health. This use must be incorporated into the student’s health plan.
