Week of September 23-27
Mardi Gras
Dear Charlemagne Families
There were so many highlights this week at Charlemagne. While all are special, I would like to note that I had an opportunity to be the Mystery Reader for 3rd grade today. I love to read aloud and the book I chose was The Three Questions retold by Jon Muth. This book reminds me to stay in the present, be fully engaged with the people I am with and do the best I can for them. Thank you for the opportunity to do this important work of educating the public with you and your children.

Bon Weekend!

Bringing Treats to School
There may be times you feel inclined to bring food items to share with your student and their classmates. Please know your generosity is so appreciated. As a reminder, there may be students in the classroom that have food allergies and special dietary needs. Please be mindful of the following when considering sharing treats with your student's class:

  • All items brought in must be commercially purchased and nutrition/ingredient labels available, per 4J Nutrition Services.
  • Please notify teacher's in advance (minimum 5 days) if you plan to bring something in. This allows time for alternative options to be made available for students with food allergies and special dietary needs. Alternatively, check with classroom teachers for dietary restrictions and bring an item safe for everyone. Please be aware, not all requests to bring food items to the classroom may be approved.
  • For further information, please see 4J Wellness Policy Overview https://4j.lane.edu/4795_4 and the Healthy Snacks and Party Guidelines https://4j.lane.edu/4797_4

We are happy to announce that ESYO will again be offering Strings 1 classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning the week of September 30. More information can be found at https://www.esyorchestras.org/programs/string-academy-i/\

Tutoring through South Eugene High School's Rotary Interact Club
This is a group of high school students dedicated to making positive change in the community. As the school year begins, they wanted to reach out to you about opportunities for collaboration with their club. Their tutoring department will be running this year with the hopes of helping elementary and middle school students who may be struggling or need some extra help in school. They have tutors in a series of subjects and are ready to help students however possible. If you are interested, please fill out the Tutoring Interest Form:  https://forms.gle/u13CgexDojryRSfw7

OBOB
OBOB 2024-25
Got OBOB Love? Have the time to volunteer? We have the position for you...OBOB Parent Lead. The OBOB parent Lead helps to collect permission slips, forms teams, prints OBOB content (here at school), oversees in-school battles, update brackets, attends regional battles with the winning school team and possibly state.

Does this person do it alone? I'm glad you asked. No. Ginger Topize (OBOB Teacher Lead) guides next steps. The Parent Lead guides a team of parent volunteers who help with all these tasks. The lead manages the team in making sure it all gets done within the guidelines and within the schedule.

If you feel up for volunteering for OBOB as the Lead or as a Team Member, please email Ginger Topize at topize_g@4j.lane.edu to express your interest.

Building and Field Trip Volunteers
Thank you to everyone who attended the Volunteer Orientations this week. We will be offering two more next week on Tuesday at 9:00 am and Wednesday at 6:00 pm. Both will be on  Zoom.

Once you complete the orientation, please come into the office to sign your confidentiality agreement.

When your children are at recess
We know it is tempting to visit with your children over the fence during recess time, but please refrain from doing so. Not all staff know every parent and it can be very disconcerting to see adults talking with a student. Please check in at the office if you need to convey a message or drop off an item. Thank you!

No Idling
No Idling Policy
Reminder: We have a No Idling policy at drop off and pick up. Idling a car for more than 10 seconds releases more emissions and uses more fuel than stopping and restarting the engine. Idling is a major source of toxic air pollution in Oregon, and vehicle exhaust is linked to serious health issues like asthma, heart disease, and cancer. If we notice stopped vehicles idling, we may ask you to turn off your car’s ignition. Thanks in advance for keeping our air safe for kids at Charlemagne.
Please stay in your car
Please Stay in Your Car During Pick-up
We are noticing caregivers in the carpool line getting out of their cars to get their student and/or to help them get into the car. Some are fully exiting their vehicle in Pause Parking to stand near the classroom doors or to go meet their student at the classroom spots. This is causing a backup in the carpool line and is unsafe for our waiting families, students and staff.

Please stay in your car during pick-up and staff will bring your student to you. If your student cannot get into the car by themselves, please park in the lot or on the street before coming to get your student so that you can assist them.

We are also noticing families not using the back crosswalk and that folks keep crossing in front of cars in the carpool line. This is very unsafe and we have been trying to remind/direct the families to the crosswalk.

Please be mindful of designated crossing areas.
