Solar Eclipse will Reach Oregon
There will be a Solar Eclipse
April 8th
at 10:30. We get a rare opportunity to observe a solar eclipse  (it’s actually a partial eclipse) during school hours on
Monday
, April 8, starting at 10:30, peaking at 11:20 or 11:30, and ending at 12:15. Please remind children it is not safe to look directly at the  and could permanently damage their eyesight. We will be monitoring for this at recess as well, depending on the weather.

Your students will be learning to ride a bike!

With the partnership of 4J Safe Routes to School, kindergarteners and first graders will be learning to ride and practicing riding bicycles during PE April 8-19!  For students who are not yet riding, they will build their skills using balance bikes (no pedals, no training wheels). Using a balance bike rather than training wheels teaches kids the trickier skill of balance first. Then we add pedals to the bikes and they take off! For more information on how to teach kids to ride a bike, bike safety tips and more, visit the Safe Routes to School resource page, here: https://www.eugenespringfieldsrts.org/local-resources.

I am looking forward to inviting this program into our school for our youngest students! Everyone will benefit from the program and all equipment is provided. Please be sure to send your student with proper footwear April 8- 19, no open toed shoes please, this will forfeit the ability to participate. All students participate the first few days, as students master the skill of bike riding a special frisbee golf unit will be available during the second week of instruction so those who have the most need get more dedicated time with our biking specialist volunteers! Please email me if you have any questions or concerns. ErinMarie Langsdorf (PE Teacher)  langsdorf_e@4j.lane.edu

Chess at Charlemagne

Jerry Ramey, Chess Club Leader reports:
Our Charlemagne team qualified for the CFS State Championships, along with three of our players who advanced to the individual finals.  We have a large club with many players who are not only very young but very talented!  Both Forrest and I are gratified to be their teachers.

Please note: There will be no chess club on April 12th because team members and coaches will be in Portland. See you Friday the 5th.

Please join us for the final Unified Basketball game of this school year!  It's on April 11th at Churchill with a 6:30 start time

If you have never been to a Unified game before, you are in for a real treat!  This will be an evening of high energy and exuberance as we watch students of all abilities use teamwork and mentorship on the court.  The teams consist of Athletes (students experiencing intellectual and/or developmental disabilities) and Partners (students in general education who provide assistance).

Unified games are a model of the inclusion work we are doing in Eugene School District. We want to pack the house at Churchill for this final game, and please come if you can!

Excessive speeds in the neighborhood
Please remember that we are located in a residential neighborhood with families and students on bikes, neighbors walking and trying to exit their driveways, pets, and wildlife sharing the same space, and that the school speed limit on Kincaid Street is 20 m.p.h.
