Happy New Year and welcome back! Hope you had a wonderful winter break!
Just a reminder that school starts back on Tuesday, January 7, so tomorrow, Monday, June 6 will be the last day of winter break.
January School Choice
In the Eugene School District, January is school choice month. If you know of families who are interested in attending Charlemagne, information about the lottery can be found here: https://www.4j.lane.edu/instruction/enrollment/schoolchoice/.
All families must enroll their students in the lottery, even if a sibling is already attending Charlemagne. Families can learn more about our school and program by attending one of the following events:
- Elementary School Showcase: The Elementary School Showcase is a chance to talk with principals and other school representatives from every 4J elementary school and get other information about school choice and more. Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St., Eugene.
- School Choice Information Meetings: Informational meetings about school choice. Spanish interpretation will be available. Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 7 p.m. at 4J Education Center, 200 N. Monroe St., Eugene.
- Charlemagne School Choice events: Three events will be held at school.
- Tuesday, January 14 @ 12:30 pm (Childcare *not* provided)
- Tuesday, January 21 @ 5:30 pm (Childcare provided– stay for our PTO meeting!)
- Wednesday, January 29 @ 9:00 am (Childcare *not* provided)
If you know of anyone considering Charlemagne, please remind them of the dates! And, if you have flexibility in your schedule, chat with Mme Courtney about leading a school tour or speaking at an information session. You can also share your own experience with school choice by dropping her an email.
Back-to-School Reminders
The school nurse would like to remind everyone it’s always a good idea to check your child’s head for lice before returning to school in order to avoid introducing it to the classroom.
Please write your student’s name inside jackets and sweaters so they are more easily identifiable when lost!

Walk and Roll – Wednesday, January 8
January 8 is our Walk & Roll to School Day! With the new year comes a chance to try new ways of getting to and from school. Tired of waiting in traffic? Imagine what else you could do with that extra time if your child was walking, biking, carpooling or riding the bus to school. You could enjoy some needed “me time” if your child rides the bus or enjoy “we time” biking or walking together. New Years is a great time to make positive changes in your life – so give it a try! Who knows how long it could take to drive with all this recent traffic? Older students can walk or roll on their own; younger students will need to walk or roll with an adult.
Average time moving
Bike – 10 Minutes = 1 mile
Walk – 20 Minutes = 1 mile

Oregon Battle of the Books
Oregon Battle of the Books will start up soon with practice battles occurring next month and the school battles occurring in March. The state tournament is on April 4, 2020. Any questions can be directed to Kim Reeder, our wonderful OBOB coordinator, at kimcooleyreeder@gmail.com
Class Reps
We are still looking for parents willing to volunteer as representatives for your child’s class to liaison with the PTO once a month at our monthly meetings. This will ensure the families in each classroom are connected with the PTO. Please email frenchiepto@gmail.com if you’re willing to volunteer. We need reps for:

¡La Resolución de Año Nuevo para Caminar y Rodar!
¡El 8 de enero es nuestra Día de Caminar y Rodar a la Escuela! Con el año nuevo, se presenta la posibilidad de tratar nuevas formas de ir y regresar de la escuela. ¿Cansado de esperar en el tráfico? Imagine que podría hacer con ese tiempo adicional si su estudiante caminara, anduviera en bicicleta, compartiera el auto o tomara el autobús para ir a la escuela. Usted podría disfrutar de un “tiempo para mí” si su estudiante fuera en el autobús o si disfruta de “pasar tiempo juntos” para andar en bicicleta o caminar juntos. El año nuevo es un buen tiempo para hacer cambios positivos en su vida, ¡así que inténtalo!En promedio, se toma 20 minutos en caminar una milla y 10 minutos en bicicleta.¿Quién sabe cuánto tiempo se podría tomar manejando con todo este tráfico reciente? Los estudiantes mayores pueden caminar o rodar por su cuenta; los estudiantes más jóvenes necesitarán caminar o rodar con un adulto.
