Dear Charlemagne Families:
Hope everyone is enjoying our long weekend and the continuing beautiful fall weather!
Charlemagne’s annual Read-a-Thon started Friday, November 1. We hope students have been getting lots of reading time logged! All students who participate will receive a small prize and be featured on our Reading Stars wall. We will also recognize students who are reading books in French— not just English!– for the Read-a-Thon.
In addition, one lucky winner, drawn at random from all participants will win an e-reader. As usual, the class with the most participation will get a party… and new this year, that same class will also choose the color Mme Courtney dyes her hair in celebration of reading!
Envelopes will be collected November 12-18.
Trivia Night – Guaranteed Fun with Other School Parents!
Back by popular demand, Charlemagne’s Trivia Night will be on November 15. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a night out with other Charlemagne parents while also supporting the school. Come impress us with your command of trivia, and have a fantastic time bonding with other school parents at the same time!
Doors open at 6:00. Trivia starts at 6:30 sharp and should wrap up by about 8:30… but we hear our hosts this year, The Duck Bar and Grill– thank you, Beaird Family!– run a fun karaoke night so feel free to stay and hang out!

Campus Clean-Up Continues
If you’re looking for a fun volunteer project, tomorrow, Monday, November 11, please join in to clean-up the courtyard outside our 1st and 2nd grade classrooms. We’ll meet at 10:30 am and wrap up by 12:30 pm. Bring gloves and weeding implements! Our next clean-up will be Monday, December 16 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm and we’ll work on some inside projects.
Counseling and Therapy Groups
Our counselor and behavior assistant are hard at work creating social skills, friendship and sporting behavior groups for students to practice kindness, empathy, problem-solving and perspective-sharing. If you are interested in your student being a part of a group, please email counselor Mme Dale (firstname.lastname@example.org) or assistant Mme Laura (email@example.com).
Charlemagne is also starting a GSA– a Gender and Sexuality Alliance. This is an inclusive group to discuss gender identity and expression, stereotypes and social attitudes. We will also talk about the various ways families can be and live together. If this is a group you or your student would be interested in attending, please contact Mme Laura Dale.
We are looking for parents willing to volunteer as representatives for your child’s class to liaison with the PTO once a month at our monthly meetings. We only need one parent per class though if you’d like to share the responsibility among several parents who rotate, that’s fine, too. This will insure the families in each classroom are connected with the PTO. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you’re willing to volunteer. We already have a volunteer for one of the kindergarten classes!
Farewell to Our School Nurse Lourie Morgan
Many of you know Nurse Lourie Morgan, who has been a great support to so many of our students here at Charlemagne. Nurse Lourie will be moving schools next week and we wish her all the best at her new campus at Twin Oaks. Nurse Lourie balances a great number of needs across several campuses and is excited at the potential of a new setting.
We have a new school nurse arriving this Tuesday and will send more information about her in our next e-News. In the meantime, thank you to Nurse Lourie for all her service. We wish her a fond farewell!
Second Phase of Student Success Act
Our school district is beginning a second phase of Student Success Act community conversations, seeking parent, staff and community input on potential investments of this new funding. More information about this second phase is below.

Student Success Act Community Conversations
Let’s Talk! Student Success Act: Investments for Success
New funding is coming to 4J schools. Oregon’s Student Success Act is expected to provide Eugene School District 4J about $12–13 million per year starting with the 2020–21 school year—about a 5% increase in the district’s general fund budget.
The district is engaging staff, families and community members to inform the planning for how to spend these funds to best support student success. The funds must be targeted to increase academic achievement, reduce disparities among student groups, and meet students’ behavioral and mental health needs. You’re invited to join the conversation.

Inversiones para el éxito: ¡Hablemos sobre la Ley de éxito estudiantil!
Nuevos fondos están llegando a las escuelas de 4J. Se espera que la Ley de Éxito Estudiantil de Oregon proporcione al Distrito Escolar de Eugene 4J alrededor de $12–13 millones por año a partir del año escolar 2020–21. Esto significa alrededor de un aumento del 5% en el presupuesto del fondo general del distrito.
