La Semaine à Charlemagne Apr. 2 – 4

Dear Charlemagne Families

I hope you are having a wonderful week with your children.

Community Living Plan  – 2012 – 2013
On Monday Apr. 2, teachers and instructional assistants will work together to help create a new and innovative Community Living Plan to be unveiled on the first day of the 2012 -2013 school year. The community living plan is school wide effort to help create a  safe, caring learning environment where students develop key interpersonal and learning attributes that will set the foundation for every student to become an inspired global citizen.

Eugene Marathon  – French Quarter  Cheering Section Apr. 29th 8:30 – 11:30!!!
“Allez-y! Allez-y!” That’s what Eugene Marathon runners will be hearing as they enter the ultimate cheer zone- the French Quarter! They will be cheered on and energized by the French Immersion K-12 programs of Eugene. We will line both sides of the Owosso Footbridge at mile 21 and cheer runners/walkers on in their best French accent as they cross the bridge and make the turn for the final 5 mile stretch back towards Hayward Field. Students of all ages (and their friends and family) from Charlemagne French Immersion, Roosevelt Middle School and the International High School at South Eugene are ready to immerse runners in a quarter-mile of French revelry. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Our goal is to have over 100 French Immersion students with their friends and family members waving, clapping, cheering, singing, drumming at what many runners believe to be the most challenging section of the marathon course. We will transform the Owosso bridge into our very own “French Quarter.”  At the conclusion of the marathon, runners will vote for their favorite “Cheer Zone” along the course. The winning “Cheer Zone” wins a $300.00 cash prize. More info to come…..

The daffodils are blooming around the garden and I can’t wait for Tuesday!

SeQuential Biofuels will donate 5 cents for every gallon of gasoline you purchase from them to Charlemagne!
Owner, Alan Twigg is very into  community support, and as such, will donate 5 cents a gallon to our school! Whenever you or your family and friends buy gas at a SeQuential Biofuels station, all you need to say is, “I would like to donate!” Then the attendant will ask for your zip code and to which organization you wish to donate.  Say “Charlemagne at Fox Hollow Elementary School please!” That is it!  At the end of each month, a check will be sent to the school.

SeQuential Biofuels has 3 locations: Two at 18th and Chambers Street, and one on 86714 McVay Hwy, out by LCC near I-5.

Yes, all SeQuential Biofuel locations have gas for regular cars.

This is an easy way to receive a business donation for our school and support a community member at the same time!

At the 18th & Chambers location’s North side fueling station, there is an espresso bar as well as yummy treats from Sweet Life and Humble Bagel available in their market.

Restaurant of the Month

Save the Date: Thursday evening, April 12th at the Charlemagne Café!

Our own chef-in-residence, Kinder parent Artie Leider will be the host for a family-oriented pasta dinner. More details to come!

We have had some muddy, wet kids this winter and are very low in the pants and underwear department. We are in need of pants mostly sizes 6-9. All pants are good, it’s great when they find something they like. Stretchy pants, like sweats work best for most. We need them for both boys and girls, but especially boys.

Thank you to those parents who return the clothes clean and ready for the next student!

Warm Regards, Madame Heather

La Semaine à Charlemagne March 5

Dear Charlemagne Families,

Superintendent Berman visits Charlemagne
Last Friday, Shelley Berman got a great view of Charlemagne school. He was able to visit classes almost every classroom, experience carpool and he had an engaging and prodcutive conversation with the Charlemagne staff. We were impressed with his thoughtful approach to instruction, his commitment to lower class sizes and his support for dual language and immersion programs. We were also impressed with the fact that he has already visited every school in the Eugene  4J District.

Classified Staff Appreciation
This week is Classified Staff Appreciation Week. Esprit de Corp is planning several activities to acknowledge and thank our awesome classified staff for all they do to support the students and staff. If you get a chance let Kurt, Heather, Quena, Jeanne, Virginia, Ms. V, Sara, and Devin know how much you appreciate them and all they do each and every day.

Staffing 2012 – 2013
This week the Charlemagne staff and Site Council will develop a preliminary staffing plan for the 2012 – 2013 school year. We are anticipating a .71 FTE reduction in certified staff and a modest 1/2 hr per day reduction in our classified staffing allotment. At this time we are anticipating 10 classroom teaching positions, which is the same as this year and we hope to continue having  instructional assistants in our K- 3 English and French classes. To do this will require unprecedented fundraising levels for the 2012 – 2013 school year. Parents who are interested in staffing and fundraising are invited to discuss the 2012 – 2013 preliminary staffing plan at the March 20th PTO meeting.

Relay for Life “Hat Drive” March 5 – March 23
Students form South Eugene High School are organizing a “Hat Drive” to collect hats and scarves for cancer patients who are receiving treatment in Eugene.

Artist in Residence – Rachel Carnes  March 19 – 23rd
I am pleased to announce that Rachel Carnes will provide dance and movement workshops for studetns in grades K-5 during the last week before spring break. Each class will have two dance/movement workshops to enjoy. More info to come.

Apple Trees, Daffodils and a Beautiful Garden
Thanks to the dynamic duo of Tabatha and Erika with support from Robin and the Northwest Youth Corp we now have 12 new apple trees on the east side of the lower field. Daffodils are blooming around the garden and we are about to plant spring crops in our brand new raised beds. It is all very exciting and I can’t wait to eat what we grow in the cafeteria this spring.

Here’s to a great week:)

South Eugene High School Relay for Life Hat Drive

We, the South Eugene High School Relay for Life Team, have been working hard this school year to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society and we need your help! We are going to be holding a “Hat Drive” throughout March at elementary and middle schools in the South Eugene area. During the entire month of March, please bring any hats or scarves to the Charlemagne front office and the South Eugene Relay for Life Team will collect the hats at the end of the month and donate them to the American Cancer Society here in Eugene. The hats may be used, but they should be clean and only lightly worn since they will be given to patients undergoing cancer treatment. You are invited to bring hats and scarves in during the entire month of March. We are proud to be making a difference in the fight against cancer, and hope you will help us help others!

Office needs extra clothing

We have had some muddy, wet kids this winter and are very low in the pants and underwear department. We are in need of pants mostly sizes 6-9. All pants are good, it’s great when they find something they like. Stretchy pants, like sweats work best for most. We need them for both boys and girls, but especially boys.

Thank you to those parents who return the clothes clean and ready for the next student!

Warm Regards, Madame Heather

Princess for a Day
In Lane County alone we have over 1000 children who are currently in the foster care system. This can be a very difficult time for many of these children. A Family for Every Child will be hosting their 4th annual Princess for a Day event on March 4, 2012. This special day is an opportunity for Oregon girls aged 2-18 to be treated like a princess for a day. The day of pampering includes a tea party lunch, hair and makeup, a photo shoot and a princess outfit to keep. This event is designed to be a gift for foster children as well as to raise awareness of foster children in Oregon. The Jr. League of Eugene is again partnering with A Family for Every Child to help create a fantastic experience for these young girls. One of the ways Jr. League is helping with this event is to procure dresses and accessories for our young princesses to wear and take home. As a parent and Jr. League member, I am asking my fellow parents to please look in your children’s closets and if you have new or gently used frilly, princessy, prom, party type dresses that you are no longer able to use, please consider donating them to this very worthy cause. You will feel so rewarded by the smiles that you will help put on these young girls’ faces. I will place a bin in the front office marked “Princess for a Day” and any items that you would like to donate can be placed there for pickup. If you would like to find out more about this special event here is the link www.afamilyforeverychild.org. Thank you so much for donating to this wonderful event and making it a success.

La Semaine à Charlemagne – February 27

Mardi Gras!

A big “Thank You” to all of the volunteers who made this years Mardi Gras a huge success for the Charlemagne Community. The silent auction, raffles, baskets, great food, games and kids running everywhere made for an exciting evening for all. From beginning to end, I was amazed at the organization and collaborative spirit of our Mardi Gras volunteers.

Food for Lane County
Thank you to all who donated to another successful Food for Lane County Food Drive campaign. It is important that our students feel a sense of compassion for those who are struggling to make ends meet and that they see by working together we can do our part to help.

We have a busy week ahead of us. Health screening for 1st, 3rd and 5th graders happens on Monday, school tours and orientation meetings on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and Superintendent Shelley Berman will spend Friday afternoon at Charlemagne. See the attached La Semaine a Charlemagne for a more detailed view of next weeks activities. Tom
