Math Madness Fundraiser is Here!!
The Math Madness fundraiser is one of the most unique and academically beneficial fundraisers of the year. Students complete a math packet then solicit donations for every problem completed correctly or they may ask for a flat donation to support the Math Madness fundraiser. This year we are asking paretns to correct their child’s math packet before collecting pledges
Completed math packets and donations are due the week of Jan. 23 – 26. We will have daily prize drawings beginning on Jan. 23, the class with the highest participation rate wins a “Pajama & Pizza Party and one lucky student from each classroom will be randomly drawn to have lunch together at Dickie Joe’s!

2012 – 2013 School Choice Lottery Process
It is hard to believe but the time for families to participate in the 2012 – 2013 School Choice Lottery process is just around the corner. We will conduct a series of school tours the last week of January and the last week of February with March 23 being the deadline for entering the 2012 – 2013 School Choice Lottery. Because of a recent change in Oregon law, a family may now apply to attend schools outside of their respective school district. In other words, families who do not live in the Eugene 4J attendance area may now participate in the 2012 – 2013 School Choice Lottery System. Eugene School District will be accepting a limited number of non 4-J families depending on each schools capacity for accepting additional students. Although many of the  details are still being worked out, we do know that families that live in the Eugene 4-J attendance area will have priority in the 2012 – 2013 School Choice Lottery process. I will keep you informed as Eugene School District decides how to incorporate families form neighboring school districts.

How the Brain Processes and Retrieves Information
As part of our year long “Professional Development Series”, Catrin Rode, Luzia and Jakob’s mom, has graciously volunteered to conduct an engaging workshop for Charlemagne and Edgewood Elementary Teachers on how the brain processes and retrieves information. Here is a brief overview of the workshop
“Defying Forgetting”
(1) How does the brain encode information into long term memory?
(2) How do we find and retrieve information from long term memory when we need it?
(3) Does motivation matter?
(4) What types of school and homework assignments support proper learning and studying?

Catrin is a researcher specializing in Cognitive Psychology. We are fortunate that she is available to help us understand how to integrate “Brain Based” research methods into everyday classroom instruction particularly as it applies to second language acquisition.
